Hiking tour in the Caldera

The PR LP 13 trail starts at the Mirador de Los Brecitos, at an altitude of 1050 metres above sea level. The first 6 km of this route have a gentle profile and a slight descent until you reach the camping area. In the first two hours of the walk, you will pass by old tobacco plantations, now abandoned. These are the Casas de Tenerra and the Casas de Taburiente. There are also some viewpoints and interesting botanical enclaves. But above all, the most striking feature is the extraordinary landscape with its spectacular cirque of peaks enclosing La Caldera.

When you reach the camping area, you have to cross a stream, stone by stone. This is Playa de Taburiente , a central enclave, ideal for a short break. And it is here that you will also find an information and security point for the Park, as well as a place to camp and spend the night. But the route continues downhill. Now, along the descent to El Reventón.

In the middle of the descent stands a monolith of imposing dimensions. It is Roque Idafe, a sacred symbol of the aborigines. A little further on, the Barranco de Las Angustias ravine appears, an impressive canyon carved out by the passage of thousands of years. Here it is worth taking a break to visit the Colours Waterfall. But the trail continues down the ravine and still holds a few surprises.

Shortly before the end, you will discover some rocks with whimsical shapes pigmented in shades of green: these are the Almohadilladas Lavas (Pillow Lavas). These volcanic formations emerged from the seabed and are now visible 300 metres above sea level.

Iconic places of La Caldera

The viewpoint of Los Brecitos

Natural entrance to La Caldera de Taburiente National Park. It can be reached via a tarmac track, ascending to 1050 metres above sea level. From there, the PR LP 13 trail begins, which descends gently into the interior of La Caldera.

Tenerra houses & Taburiente houses

The Tenerra houses are close to Los Brecitos. The Taburiente houses are close to the camping area.  Both are semi-abandoned and were former tobacco plantations in the past.

Lomo del Tagasaste viewpoint

Spectacular viewpoint with an extraordinary visual angle where you can contemplate the entire cirque of peaks that make up La Caldera. This viewpoint is located about 25 minutes from the start of the route.

The Round Stones (Piedras Redondas) Ravine

The Piedras Redondas (Round Stones) are located in the middle of the route, just beyond the Mirador del Lomo del Tagasaste viewpoint. They are huge blocks of conglomerate material that were broken off by erosion.

The 9 Fat Pines (Pinos Gordos)

Centennial pines that have survived a multitude of fires and felling over the years. Some of them, with trunks whose diameter exceeds several metres and heights of up to 40 metres. You have to go a little off the path to reach them.

Roque Idafe

Monolithic phallic-shaped boulder with great symbolic value for the natives of La Palma. In ancient times the Benahorites prayed to it and worshipped it. It was believed that if this monolith collapsed, great calamities would befall the island.

Colours Waterfall

Possibly one of the most emblematic places in La Caldera. But it is a waterfall of artificial origin. It is the pigmentations on the stones, with different colours, that have given it its name and popularity.

Pillow Lavas

Of very ancient volcanic origin, these large rocks were formed in the seabed. And as the island has emerged from the sea, these geological formations have been exposed.
