Hiking on La Palma

The Pirates’ Cave

Guided walk

The Pirates’ Cave

42 € per person

Walking through the Barranco del Jurado ravine from the Jesús neighbourhood, we descend towards the sea along an old cobbled path. The ravine, with its majestic presence and steep walls, imposes a permanent zigzagging downhill. The path was used by the fishermen of yesteryear in their daily work. But next to the sea, they had a paradisiacal refuge: the Cueva de Los Piratas or Cueva de La Candelaria. It is the “Santorini” of La Palma: a multitude of cave-houses embedded in the concavity of a cliff next to the sea make up this picturesque enclave, the end point of our walk.

Hiking to the Pirates’ Cave

From the district of El Jesús, in the municipality of Tijarafe, our route runs in a permanent descent, crossing the impressive Barranco del Jurado ravine. This name is given by a very visible hole or “juro” in the middle of the ravine. After a short ascent through the next ravine we suddenly arrive at a huge cave sculpted by the sea. This is the Cave of the Pirates! After a well-deserved rest and perhaps a good swim in the sea, we will take the road back uphill briefly to the car park, where our transport is waiting for us.

Tijarafe

In the northwest of La Palma, the village of Tijarafe is situated 700 metres above sea level. The natural monument of Barranco del Jorado, one of the most impressive ravines of La Palma, is located in this municipality.

During this walking route we enjoy breathtaking views over a deep blue sea. The paved path reveals a vegetation of almond trees. As we get closer to the sea, thickets of tabaibas and opuncias appear until we reach the Poris de Candelaria, also known as Pirates’ Cave.

The Pirates’ Cave

Here, the roaring sea crashes with huge waves into the cave-houses embedded in the rocks. The Cueva de La Candelaria, also known as Cueva de Los Piratas, is still the summer home for fishermen and families from Tijarafe. But it is the Virgen de La Candelaria, its patron saint, who gives the cave its name.

Nearby is the Cueva Bonita (only accessible by sea) and a rugged coastline with a furious sea, only suitable for bathing in the summer calms.

The Cueva de Los Piratas is the “Santorini” of the island. A dreamlike enclave that invites you to abandon yourself and stimulates the senses with the perception of an imagined paradise.
