    Tenerife

With a surface area of over 2,000 square kilometres, it is the most populated island in the archipelago. It is also the highest, with the Pico del Teide rising to 3,715 metres above the sea.

The Cañadas del Teide were declared a National Park in 1954. Since then this natural space has become one of the most visited places on the island. The Roques de García, which appeared on the old thousand-peseta banknotes, are an icon both for hiking routes in Tenerife and La Gomera and for those visiting Teide for the first time.

    La Gomera

It was a support and provisioning point for Christopher Columbus’ expeditions to the New World. Today this island is one of the top ten hiking routes in Tenerife and La Gomera. Its Garajonay National Park contains the largest reserve of laurel forests in the whole archipelago. And it is an extraordinary residue of vegetation from the Tertiary Era.

The northern side of the island is rural in appearance, with small villages and a humid atmosphere. However, the south, with its spectacular ravines, has a warm climate and tropical vegetation. Its main tourist attraction is Valle Gran Rey.

    La Palma

It has been on the world’s radar due to the recent volcanic eruption at Cumbre Vieja. La Palma is an island that, with just 726 km2, encompasses an enormous diversity of landscapes and microclimates. This is partly due to its extreme orography. But it is also partly due to its peculiar geology: the northern half is of an ancient and very eroded formation, but the southern half is of recent volcanic creation, still active today. And in its centre, La Caldera de Taburiente forms an enormous erosion crater, also declared a National Park.  La Palma offers an extensive network of hiking trails which, together with the hiking routes in Tenerife and La Gomera, form an excellent natural triangle for walking in the Canary Islands.

Teide + Roque Garcia TENERIFE - hiking in the Cañadas del Teide N.P.

The first hiking route takes place in Las Cañadas del Teide National Park, at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level. From Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the bus heads along the road to La Esperanza, passing the Astrofísicos de Canarias and arriving at Las Cañadas. And it is here that our trail starts around the famous "Roques de García", large basaltic remains standing imposingly on the "Llano de Ucanca". The majestic Pico del Teide, rising to 3,715 metres, forms an imposing backdrop along the entire route. After this snack on foot, we take the cable car up to the rambleta del Teide and walk from there to the spectacular viewpoint of the "Pico Viejo".

La Palma Volcán Cumbre Vieja LA PALMA – Excursion to Caldera de Taburiente N.P. and new volcano

Early in the morning a local flight will take us to the neighbouring island of La Palma in just 30 minutes. There we set off for Roque de Los Muchachos, the highest point of La Palma and part of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. To the south we can already make out the new volcanic cone that poured its lava to the west, beyond La Caldera. Small rural villages spread out to the north. And in the distance we can make out the silhouettes of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro. But before descending we will also visit the recently opened Roque de Los Muchachos Visitor Centre. Our excursion continues to the northwest until we reach the Mirador del Time viewpoint, where we will enjoy a spectacular view of the entire Aridane Valley and the volcanic lava flow that reached the sea. After crossing the Barranco de Las Angustias ravine, the natural outlet of La Caldera de Taburiente, we continue our journey to the Mirador de Tajuya. This viewpoint became infamous for being the closest point from which to observe the monster cone and its destructive lava vomit. After a brief visit to the beautiful island capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, we flew back to Tenerife.

Barranco Infierno Tenerife TENERIFE – Hiking in the Barranco del Infierno Gorge

This is a peculiar Protected Natural Area in the municipality of Adeje, in the south of Tenerife.  Due to its abrupt nature, it has come to be called Barranco del Infierno (Hell's Ravine). Thanks to the abundance of water in a warm and arid environment, it is home to more than 400 species of fauna and flora, some of which are endemic. The path runs along an old shepherds' path that gently ascends along the bed of the ravine.  As you go deeper, the vegetation becomes more exuberant until you reach a spectacular 200-metre high waterfall. This route ends in the same place where it begins: in Calle de Los Molinos in the municipality of Adeje, 350 metres above the sea.

La Gomera Hermigua senderismo en Canarias LA GOMERA – Garajonay N.P. + northern excursion

We leave the hotel in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and drive to Los Cristianos in the south. In just 50 minutes the ferry takes us to the neighbouring island of La Gomera, where the bus awaits us to take us on an excursion to the Garajonay National Park and along the northern slopes of the island.  After leaving the spectacular Roque de Agando behind, we enter the magical laurel forests, a vegetation that is a remnant of prehistoric times and still survives in the Canary Islands. Now our bus takes us to Vallermoso, located in the northwest of La Gomera. From this picturesque village, whose icon is the Roque Cano, the winding road to the north runs along the coast between imposing cliffs until it reaches the Mirador de Abrante, an impressive glassed-in viewpoint from where the majestic Pico del Teide looms majestically. At its foot, the idyllic village of Agulo invites us to stroll through its romantic narrow streets. The excursion continues to Hermigua and ends in San Sebastián de La Gomera, the capital of the island.

LA GOMERA – Senderismo en el Cedro

From the Alto del Contadero, 1,370 metres above sea level, we start our descent along an extraordinary path that takes us through dense laurel forests with giant ferns. It is a residual vegetation from the Tertiary Era that envelops us in a magical plant world where the forests take on a life of their own. Ancient fayas and heather with twisted trunks form a dense vegetation through which we make our way amidst the whistling of the wind and the twittering of birds. The trees tell us about their past during our journey through the forest until we reach the beautiful village of El Cedro, located 850 metres above the sea and with exceptional views of Hermigua. After a short rest and a well-deserved meal, the driver picks us up to take us back to San Sebastián de La Gomera. After the obligatory break and socialising with other hikers in the Las Vistas Restaurant, the descent continues through the Barranco del Cedro ravine, ending in Hermigua, a northern village with an agricultural tradition that boasts "the best climate in the world".

La Gomera Valle Gran Rey hiking trips LA GOMERA – Senderismo en Valle Gran Rey

Valle Gran Rey was a mecca for hippies in the 1970s. Today it is a glittering tourist enclave, although it retains the primitive character of yesteryear. The valley is an immense palm grove terraced into countless small terraces. Houses dot the sunny enclave, spilling down from the top to the coast. The Casa de La Seda is the starting point of the route through El Guro, through the Arure ravine. The culmination of this route is a beautiful waterfall almost three kilometres from where we started our walk. From there, we will have to retrace our steps back to the Casa de La Seda. And in the afternoon we still have time to enjoy the mythical Playa del Inglés beach, spot dolphins and cetaceans on a sea excursion or enjoy the alternative tourist atmosphere of Valle Gran Rey.
